Gray Selected As Finalist For Tewaaraton Award
May 14, 2021 | Men's Lacrosse
North Carolina's Chris Gray has been selected as one of five finalists for the men's Tewaaraton Award, given annually to the nation's top collegiate lacrosse player. The senior attackman is the third Tar Heel to be a finalist for the prestigious honor, following Jed Prossner in 2004 and Marcus Holman in 2013.
Â
Gray, from Wading River, N.Y., ranks second in the nation in points per game (5.92), seventh in goals and eighth in assists. He leads the Tar Heels (11-2) in all three categories.
Â
North Carolina opens NCAA Tournament play on Saturday, hosting Monmouth for a noon game at Dorrance Field. UNC is the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA field.
Â
Gray was voted by the league's coaches as the 2021 ACC Offensive Player of the Year after leading all scorers in points and goals. Through 13 games he has 42 goals and 35 assists for 77 points, which is just four points short of the program record for point in a season (Bruce Ledwith, 81 points in 1973).
Â
The recipient of the Tewaaraton Award, which dates back to 2001, will be selected following the season. Â North Carolina has two finalists for the women's award in Taylor Moreno and Jamie Ortega, giving UNC three of the 10 total finalists, more than any other school.
Â
The men's and women's 2021 Tewaaraton awards will be presented on June 5 at halftime of a  Premier Lacrosse League game at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.  The game will be broadcast on NBC Sports Network.
Â
"We are incredibly proud of these talented student-athletes and all they've accomplished this season," said Jeffrey Harvey, chairman of the Tewaaraton Foundation. "We wish them the best of luck during this year's NCAA Tournament and look forward to what will be an exciting announcement with our Premier Lacrosse League partners live on the field in Gillette Stadium."
