May 15, 2021 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina (23-22) shut out No. 8 Louisville (26-17) 5-0 on Senior Day on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium Saturday afternoon.
Carolina was led by a stellar performance on the mound by Caleb Cozart, Connor Ollio, and Gage Gillian. The group allowed just three hits, tied for a season-low, and zero runs, which was the first shutout by the Tar Heels since Feb. 25, 2020, an 8-0 win against North Carolina A&T.
Cozart started the contest on the mound and tossed the first 2.0 innings. He allowed just two hits and struck out a pair. Ollio earned the decision for the Tar Heels and was magnificent, as he threw 4.0 hitless innings.
Gillian picked up his third save of the season after he pitched the final 3.0 innings, which yielded four strikeouts and one hit.
UNC struck first in the second inning when Brett Centracchio poked a two-out RBI single to right-center field to score Danny Serretti from second, who drew a walk earlier in the inning. Tomas Frick also reached in the second inning with a single which moved Serretti to second, a batter before UNC took the initial lead.
In the third frame, Serretti drew a bases-loaded walk to extend the lead to a pair. After a pitching change, the Cardinals' reliever threw the ball in the dirt for his first pitch, which allowed Caleb Roberts to score.
Both club were scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings.
After Tomas Frick was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth with one out, Centracchio blasted a two-run home run to extend the Tar Heels lead to five runs. The final would end there and Carolina would secure its sixth ACC series win of the season and first in program history against the Cardinals.
Centracchio ended the game as Carolina's only multi-hit performer (2-for-4) and tacked on a trio of RBI.
Today was the first game that Louisville had been shut out since Georgia Tech blanked the Cardinals on March 23, 2019.
Carolina looks to complete its second ACC series sweep tomorrow at 11 a.m.
