May 16, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Top-seeded North Carolina scored four consecutive goals in three minutes to break open a close, defensive struggle and defeat James Madison, 14-9, in the NCAA Tournament second round on Sunday at Dorrance Field.
The Tar Heels advance to next weekend's NCAA quarterfinals at home against eighth-seeded Stony Brook, which beat Rutgers in the second round on Sunday afternoon.
Jamie Ortega scored a game-high four goals, while Katie Hoeg added two goals and four assists while moving into second place in NCAA history in career assists.
Tayler Warehime added three goals and an assist, and Melissa Sconone scored once with three assists. Caitlyn Wurzburger scored twice, and Scottie Rose Growney and Kerrigan Miller each scored single goals.
Isabella Peterson scored four goals and controlled seven draws for the Dukes.
"JMU is a really tough opponent," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "They won the CAAA, which has four teams in the NCAA Tournament, and their reward was to play us. And our reward for winning the ACC was playing them. I think that's a really hard second-round matchup. I feel bad for them, because someone had to lose today, and two really good teams played.
"We hadn't played in two weeks, and we had to come in and match JMU's intensity after they'd played on Friday," Levy continued. "Just like every game, there are areas where I feel like we can get better and be sharper. This team consistently is dissatisfied with how they play. They're looking to play really clean and really sharp all the time, so I appreciate that about them a lot. I thought we did a really good job slogging through the game against a tough defense."
JMU's defense face-guarded Ortega for portions of the game, switching defenses and limiting her opportunities, but she still finished with three first-half goals on five shots. JMU led, 4-2, with 18:44 to go in the opening period before Carolina ended the half on a 7-2 run to lead, 9-6, at the break.
The outcome was still in question midway through the second half until Carolina pulled away. Leading 10-8 with 15:15 to go, UNC ripped off four straight goals in three minutes to open up a 14-8 lead and ice the win.
UNC outshot JMU, 16-8, in the second half after the Dukes had an 18-16 shooting edge in the first half. JMU committed 31 fouls to Carolina's 18 in the game.
Taylor Moreno went the distance in goal for the Tar Heels, making nine saves to improve to 18-0 this season and 47-5 in her career. Molly Dougherty allowed 14 goals in 52:21 and took the loss, making four saves.
