Women's Lacrosse Claims Final Four Berth With 14-11 Win Over Stony Brook
May 22, 2021 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Top-seeded North Carolina scored the final five goals of the game and came from behind to beat eighth-seeded Stony Brook, 14-11, in an NCAA Tournament quarterfinal on Saturday at Dorrance Field. Five different Tar Heels scored in the 5-0 run, as UNC overcame an 11-9 deficit in the final 7:34.
Stony Brook twice took two-goal leads in the second half, ripping off a 7-3 run coming out of the break. The Seawolves scored with 8:41 remaining to post an 11-9 lead before UNC went on its final run to take control.
Carolina advanced to next weekend's NCAA semifinals, reaching the final four for the ninth time in the last 12 NCAA Tournaments (since 2009). The Tar Heels will meet No. 4 seed Boston College on Friday May 28 in Towson, Md., at either noon or 2 p.m.
"Congrats to Stony Brook on a great season, first and foremost," UNC head coach Jenny Levy said after the game. "It didn't surprise me that it was close, because I anticipated that based on how their defense plays and what their offense does. I'm really proud of the way my upperclassmen stepped up for us. At eight minutes, down by two [goals], I was curious to see how we'd handle it. We work on situations all the time in practice, so I knew we had it in us. We just had to buckle down and get it done."
Jamie Ortega had game highs with four goals and seven points for UNC, posting her 63rd career multi-goal game. Ortega has 81 goals this season, tying the school single-season record she set as a sophomore in 2019.
Katie Hoeg pitched in a goal and five assists, while Tayler Warehime added a hat trick with three goals (including the eventual game-winner with 4:19 to play) and Caitlyn Wurzburger scored twice.
Melissa Sconone provided a change of pace offensively off the bench with a goal and an assist. Scottie Rose Growney also had a goal and an assist. Ally Mastroianni scored a key free position goal with 2:37 remaining, and Nicole Humphrey added a goal.
Taryn Ohlmiller tallied three goals and two assists for the Seawolves, who also got two goals apiece from Ally Kennedy, Bridget Considine and Ellie Masera.
Taylor Moreno (19-0) went the distance in goal for Carolina, making eight saves. Kameron Halsall (13-3) made seven saves for Stony Brook.
The Seawolves controlled 15 draws in the game to Carolina's 12, but the Tar Heels were able to come up with key draw controls and a key caused turnover by Kayla Wood in the closing minutes to preserve the victory.
It was the first time an opponent won more draws than UNC in a Tar Heel win since April 27, 2019, in the ACC Tournament semifinals against Duke.
