Hoeg Wins Kellie Thompson Shiley Award

CHAPEL HILL— Katie Hoeg is the 2021 winner of the Kellie Thompson Shiley Award, the University of North Carolina women's lacrosse program announced on Monday.  Hoeg, a senior from Mattituck, N.Y., is one of the top players in NCAA history on the field and one of the top student-athletes in UNC history in the classroom. Â
Hoeg ranks second in NCAA history in career assists with 227 and leads the nation in 2021 in both assists and assists per game.  In the classroom, Hoeg recently graduated with a major in biology and minors in both chemistry and English. She won an ACC Weaver James Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship Award in 2020 and will attend dental school at Carolina this Fall.
Kellie Thompson played at Carolina from 1999-2002, earning All-America honors three times and helping lead the Tar Heels to the 2002 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament championship and the 2002 NCAA semifinals.  A team co-captain in 2002, she set and held the UNC scoring records for a game, season and career for over a decade.  She passed away unexpectedly in 2012 and is survived by her husband, Ryan Shiley, and their children, Landon, Blake and Paige.
The Kellie Thompson Shiley Award is given annually to the Tar Heel player who excels in the classroom and on the field, displays outstanding leadership at all times, sets a positive example for younger players and has a true passion for the game of lacrosse, all of which were traits Kellie displayed.
