Baseball Falls In Series Finale Versus No. 8 Notre Dame

The Tar Heels struck early in game three with two runs in the opening frame. Dallas Tessar smoked a lead-off double down the left field line and after he advanced to third on a groundout, touched home plate on a sacrifice fly to center field off of the bat of Angel Zarate. Danny Serretti followed with his seventh home run of the season- a solo home run to left field to push the UNC lead to 2-0.

Notre Dame answered with a pair of 2RBI doubles to take a 4-2 lead. The added an RBI double to hold the three-run lead after an inning.

Two Tar Heel freshmen, Max Riemer and Mac Horvath, led off the second frame with back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to two.

Riemer collected his second hit of the afternoon in the third after he belted a 2RBI single with the bases loaded to even the score. In the bottom of the frame, Notre Dame retook the lead with a solo home run.

The Irish extended their lead to 12-5 with a six-run fourth inning that included two home runs and a 2RBI single.

An RBI single to right field gave Notre Dame a 13-6 lead in the fifth.

After two scoreless innings from both sides, Notre Dame added six additional runs in eighth inning to go up 19-5.

The 19 runs surrendered were the most Carolina had given up since giving up 19 runs against Georgia Tech on May 12, 2001.

Riemer was impressive in his first start behind the plate and finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a double. He also threw out two runners attempting to steal a base.

Carolina is back on the diamond on Tuesday on Bryson Field at Boshamer Stadium on Tuesday against Campbell.
