Women's Tennis Cruises Past SCSU

CHAPEL HILL - Top seed North Carolina picked up a 4-0 victory over South Carolina State on Friday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Women's Tennis Championship from Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.Â
North Carolina (27-0) will face No. 29 Old Dominion (17-7) in Saturday's second round match at 4 p.m. The Monarchs earned a 4-2 victory over No. 33 Arkansas (11-11) on Friday morning on the indoor courts.Â
The doubles portion of the match was played outdoors and took about 20 minutes for Carolina to grab an early 1-0 lead over the MEAC champions.
No. 4 Elizabeth Scotty and Makenna Jones first posted a 6-0 win on court two, while No. 34 Alle Sanford and Reilly Tran wrapped it up with a 6-0 win on court three.Â
With rain returning to the forecast, the six singles matches were conducted indoors.
Freshman No. 36 Fiona Crawley closed our her match to increase the advantage for the Tar Heels. The win improved her record to 26-0 in her fabulous first season in Chapel Hill.
No. 97 Elizabeth Scotty and No. 41 Alexa Graham wrapped up the match with a pair of straight-set wins from courts three and one, respectively. Graham's win ties her with classmate Sara Daavettila for second in program history with 142 career victories.
Carolina improves to 5-0 against South Carolina State in postseason play. The Bulldogs finish the 2021 season with a 6-5 record.Â
