CHAPEL HILL—Five-time defending Atlantic Coast Conference champion North Carolina (18-0) has earned the No. 1 seed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, the NCAA announced on Sunday night with the release of its 29-team field.
Carolina, an automatic qualifier as the ACC champion, will host NCAA games on Friday May 14 and Sunday May 16 at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill.
James Madison (11-4) and Johns Hopkins (8-6) will meet in the first round on Friday at 5 p.m. The winner will advance to play UNC in the second round on Sunday at noon. Both games will be streamed by ESPN3.
Tar Heels enter the NCAA Tournament with an 18-0 record, including a 9-0 ACC mark. Carolina won its fifth consecutive ACC Tournament last weekend, beating Louisville, Notre Dame and Syracuse to sweep to the title.
The Tar Heels earn an NCAA Tournament bid for the 16th tournament in a row and the 22nd time overall. Carolina has won the NCAA championship twice since 2013 (2013, 2016). Head coach Jenny Levy's 34 NCAA Tournament wins rank fifth in NCAA history.
UNC is a top-five seed for the 12th year in a row. Five of the top eight seeds are from the Atlantic Coast Conference.
"We're really excited that we're back in tournament time in May, with the tournament obviously cut short last year," head coach Jenny Levy told ESPNU on Sunday night. "Congratulations to all the teams and coaches that got in. It's been a really tough year for everybody, with trying to navigate covid and all the policies and protocols with your team.
"To say the least, we're all really excited to get to host again. I'm really proud of my team and my coaching staff for all the hard work they've put in this year."
Carolina is making its 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance. The Tar Heels are 34-19 in NCAA Tournament games and have made 11 semifinal appearances (1997, 1998, 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019), including eight in the last 11 tournaments.
Carolina is the No. 1 overall seed, followed by No. 2 seed Northwestern and No. 3 seed Syracuse.
