Howell Selected To Maxwell Award Watch List

SOUTHAMPTON, Pa. - Sam Howell, a semifinalist in 2020 for the Maxwell Award, will begin the 2021 campaign on the watch list that was announced Monday by the Maxwell Football Club.Â
Howell has re-written the UNC record books in just two seasons. His 68 total touchdown passes are the most though a sophomore season in ACC history and are tied for the Tar Heel school record.Â
The Indian Trail, N.C., native led the ACC and ranked sixth nationally with 30 touchdown passes in 2020, while also topping the league with 3,586 passing yards, the fourth most in the nation.Â
Given annually to the outstanding player in college football, the Maxwell Award has been presented to the College Player of the Year since 1937 and is named in honor of Robert "Tiny" Maxwell who was a former standout at the Swarthmore College and a renowned sports writer and football official. Â
The Maxwell Award watch list will once again incorporate a broad spectrum of Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) programs and conferences from coast to coast.Â
The full list consists of 80 players.
