Volleyball Announces 2021 Schedule
July 27, 2021 | Volleyball
CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina volleyball and head coach Joe Sagula announced its fall 2021 schedule Monday, highlighted by hosting three Top-25 teams at Carmichael Arena this season.
"We always aim to play a balanced schedule, home and away, against teams that will test us in different ways to begin the season and I think that's what we have," Sagula said. "We like our ACC schedule this year as well. We will host teams that we narrowly lost on the road to last season so it will be good to play them at home. One of our goals is to compete and to return to the top of the ACC this year with a shot at the NCAA Tournament. I feel that our schedule will help prepare for that and give us the opportunities to reach our goals."
Before the official start to the season, North Carolina will split in two for their annual Blue/White Scrimmage (Aug. 20) in Carmichael Arena. The next day, UNC welcomes High Point (Aug. 21) for an exhibition match.
"We will be tested right from the start, with a competitive tournament of three matches in Dallas at SMU (SFA, Pacific and host SMU), and then return home to play our opening home match vs Colorado State, a traditionally strong NCAA ranked team, along with regional opponents East Carolina and Wofford. After taking on the ACC-Big Ten challenge (UNC-Duke vs Michigan-Michigan St.) on the road, we will return home for a final weekend of in-state teams with Elon, Charlotte and Davidson."
The Tar Heels hit the road early in the season, traveling to Dallas to take part in the SMU Tournament. Carolina will take on Stephen F. Austin (Aug. 27) in the morning before facing Pacific in the night cap. The Heels will take on host SMU (Aug. 28) on Saturday afternoon.
"We have been looking forward to this 2021 season for a very long time, to return to campus after a challenging 2020 year for everyone. Our travel will return to a more traditional schedule, and a great non-conference schedule in our pre-season. With almost half of our schedule played at home we all look forward to playing in front of our loyal Tar Heel fans in Carmichael."
Following the tournament at SMU, the Heels open the 2021 season at Carmichael Arena by welcoming Colorado State (Sept. 3) and Wofford and East Carolina (Sept. 4) to Carmichael arena, before heading to the Motor City state taking on Michigan State (Sept. 10) and Michigan (Sept. 12).
"Once again this 2021 schedule will provide a great balance of competitive teams from across the country and our region to provide opportunities for our team to grow and reach our goals. We feel we have the depth this year on our roster to face the many challenges and train and compete at a high level in both the ACC and against a variety of non-conference opponents."
Closing out the non-conference season at Carmichael hosting three teams from the Tar Heel State, taking on Elon (Sept. 14) in a mid-week tussle, then hosting the 49ers of Charlotte (Sept. 17) and Davidson (Sept. 18).
"It starts with our first ACC opponent at home on Sept. 24 - top ranked #8 Pittsburgh, and later in the season at home vs. ACC champion #11 Louisville on Nov 5, and #24 ranked Notre Dame."
ACC action begins with the Heels hosting Pitt (Sept. 24) and Virginia (Sept 26). The Panthers are one of five teams that the Heels will face this season that participated in the 2020/2021 NCAA Volleyball Championship.
North Carolina begin ACC road play in the Sunshine State venturing to Miami (Oct. 1) before making a stop at Florida State (Oct.3). Wake Forest (Oct. 8) and Virginia Tech (Oct. 10) visit Carmichael, while the Heels travel to Boston College (Oct. 15) and Syracuse (Oct. 17).
The back half of ACC play sees the heels host in-state foes N.S. State (Oct. 20) and Duke (Oct. 22) before heading down to Georgia Tech (Oct. 29) and Halloween stop at Clemson (Oct. 31)
NCAA tournament participants Notre Dame (Nov. 5) and Louisville (Nov. 7) make the trek to Chapel Hill.
The Heels close out the road portion of ACC play heading to Virginia Tech (Nov. 12) and Virginia (Nov. 14), then return to Chapel Hill for the season finally against Miami (Nov. 21) and the final home game against rival Duke (Nov. 26).
The 2021 NCAA Tournament begins on Dec. 2. The first four rounds will be hosted on campus sites according to seeding by the NCAA Selection Committee. Unlike the 2020 tournament that consisted of only 48 teams due to COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 tournament should return to the usual format of 64 qualifying teams. The NCAA Semifinals and Championship will be held at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio December 16 and 18, 2021.
