
Five Tar Heels Earn Phi Beta Kappa Induction

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Five Tar Heel student-athletes were inducted into Phi Beta Kappa honorary society during the spring semester, recognizing their outstanding academic performance throughout their time at UNC. Olivia Curran (rowing), Lindsey Lanier (women's cross country/track & field), Juliana Micchia (rowing), Camryn Petit (women's cross country/track & field), and Laura Sparling (women's soccer) excelled academically while representing UNC in varsity competition. They were among 221 UNC undergraduates honored.
Curran, from Needham, Mass., majored in global studies with minors in medical anthropology and Spanish for the professions.
Lanier, from Charlotte, majored in biology with a minor in neuroscience.
Micchia, from Wake Forest, N.C., majored in peace, war and defense and political science with a minor in history. She plans to enroll at the UNC School of Law this fall.
Petit, from Braselton, Ga., is majoring in neuroscience with minors in chemistry and Spanish for the professions. She plans to graduate in December of 2021.
Sparling, from Chapel Hill, majored in psychology.
Phi Beta Kappa membership is open to undergraduates in the College of Arts & Sciences and professional degree programs who meet stringent eligibility requirements.
A student who has completed 75 hours of coursework in the liberal arts and sciences with a grade point average of 3.85 or better, on a 4-point scale, is eligible for membership. Also eligible is any student who has completed 105 hours of coursework in the liberal arts and sciences with a 3.75 GPA. Grades earned at other universities are not considered. Less than one percent of all college students qualify.
Phi Beta Kappa has 290 chapters nationwide. UNC-Chapel Hill's chapter, Alpha of North Carolina, was founded in 1904 and is the oldest of seven chapters in the state. Each year, Phi Beta Kappa chapters and alumni associations across the country raise and distribute more than $1 million in awards, scholarships and prizes benefiting high schools and college students.
