Dickey Magnificent In 2-0 Win Over Ohio State
August 29, 2021 | Women's Soccer
COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 2 North Carolina (4-0) earned its fourth-straight win over Ohio State (2-2), 2-0, on Sunday afternoon in Columbus, Ohio.
Claudia Dickey shined in goal for the Tar Heels and collected nine saves, which set a career high.
Despite being outshot 18-13, UNC made the most of its opportunities to remain perfect on the season.
Avery Patterson scored her first-career goal in the 17th minute to give North Carolina a 1-0 lead when she finished a free kick from Rachel Jones into the back of the net from four yards out. Patterson, unmarked by the Buckeyes' defense, used her left foot to push the ball past the Ohio State goalkeeper.
Dickey faced seven shots on goal through the first 45 minutes of the match, which set a career-high for saves in a game. The Buckeyes peppered Dickey throughout the half, but Dickey made save-after-save to preserve Carolina's 1-0 lead.
The Buckeyes' best opportunity came just two minutes into the second half after an Ohio State cross went just over Dickey to an Ohio State attacking player with an open net, but the header-attempt was mishit and ended up in the hands of Dickey.
Dorwart gave North Carolina a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute when she finished a rebound off of the near post to give the Tar Heels' a second-half insurance goal. Dorwart fed Patterson after a long run, who fired an initial shot at the Ohio State goalkeeper. The ball bounced off of the keeper in front of the net and to Dorwart, who collected her second goal in as many games.
The Tar Heels' backline tightened up in the second half and allowed just two shots on goal in the final 45 minutes of the contest.
In Carolina's last 51 matches, the Tar Heels are 46-3-2.
North Carolina returns home to Dorrance Field on Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. against Northwestern.
