CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – After opening the 2021 field hockey season with six games away from Chapel Hill, the Tar Heels are finally home.
UNC will host Miami (Ohio) on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Karen Shelton Stadium in the team's home opener. The last time the Tar Heels played on the KSS turf, they won a national championship, claiming the 2020 NCAA crown in title game played on May 9, 2021.
Admission to the game is free and commemorative NCAA Championship posters will be available for the first 500 fans.
The Tar Heels come into the game 3-3 on the year and ranked sixth nationally. Miami is 3-5 overall following a 1-0 win at Appalachian State on Friday.
The teams haven't met since 2016, but the RedHawks are familiar with Karen Shelton Stadium, having played a 2020 NCAA Tournament first round game against Stanford in Chapel Hill last spring. On April 30, 2021, Miami fell in a thriller vs. Stanford, 5-4 in overtime at KSS.
UNC leads the series with Miami 4-0, with the most recent meeting in 2016 in Oxford, Ohio, where Carolina won 6-0. The teams' last matchup in Chapel Hill was on Sept. 20, 2015, when the Tar Heels won 3-0.
