CHAPEL HILL—Duke grabbed a 2-0 lead on a pair of broken plays in the first 13 minutes of the game and went on to defeat North Carolina, 3-0, in men's soccer action on Sunday night at Dorrance Field.

UNC lost its second consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference game and fell to 4-2-1 this season, 0-2 in conference play. Duke improved to 5-1, 2-0.

Scotty Taylor, Shakur Mohammed and Amir Daley each scored goals for the Blue Devils.

Carolina is ranked as highly as No. 4 in this week's Top Drawer Soccer poll. Duke is ranked as highly as No. 12 in the College Soccer News poll.

Duke took an early lead in the fifth minute when Shakur Mohammed scored off a rebound at the 4:08 mark.

The Blue Devils went up 2-0 barely 10 minutes later when Daley scored off another rebound. Mohammed stole a UNC pass and dished to Taylor, whose shot was blocked by Tar Heel defender Fillipo Zattarin. Daley collected the rebound, however, and scored into the bottom right corner of the net at the 12:46 mark.

Carolina out-shot the Blue Devils, 11-3, in the opening 45 minutes but trailed, 2-0, at halftime before a crowd of 2,310, the largest crowd of the season for the Tar Heels.

In the second half, Duke scored another early goal when a Blue Devil pass richocheted off Tar Heel defender Jonathan Sinclair. Taylor collected the loose ball at close range and scored into the top left corner of the net past UNC goalkeeper Alec Smir for a 3-0 edge.

In the game, UNC out-shot Duke, 17-4.

Smir took the loss in goal for Carolina. Duke's Eliot Hamill made six saves to pick up the victory in the net.

The Tar Heels will return to the field at Virginia next Saturday September 25 at 4 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.

Notes:
• Sunday's result marked the first time Duke has beaten UNC by multiple goals since the 1999 ACC Tournament championship game (a 4-0 Duke win).
• UNC fell to 0-2 in ACC play for the first time since 2006.
• Carolina lost by multiple goals at home for the first time since 2010 against Akron (3-0).
• Carolina is 50-37-10 all-time against Duke and is 18-6-4 against the Blue Devils in the last 28 meetings in the series. UNC went 3-0 against Duke during the 2020 season.
• UNC is 4-2-1 this season and has out-shot its opponents by a margin of 147-23 through seven games.
