Tar Heels Blank Tigers for First Time This Season
Bella Sember, a freshman from Centerport, N.Y., scored her first collegiate goal to break a scoreless tie with 13:26 to play in the first half to lead the fourth-ranked University of North Carolina women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over No. 22 Clemson Sunday at Dorrance Field.
Â
The Tar Heels broke a two-game home winless streak in improving to 8-1-1 overall, 1-1-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Tigers fall to 7-3 and 2-1 in the league.
Â
It was the first time this season Clemson was held scoreless.
Â
Sember took a throw in, dribbled past several Clemson defenders toward the center of the field near the top of the box and launched a left-footed strike that beat Clemson goalkeeper Hensley Hancuff to the lower right corner of the goal. It was the first time in four home matches UNC scored first.
Â
Early in the second half, Lauren Wrigley sent a through ball behind the Tiger defense to Isabel Cox, who dribbled in one on one and slotted a shot past Hancuff for a 2-0 lead.
Â
The Tar Heels tacked on a final goal with 5:48 to play when UNC goalkeeper Claudia Dickey converted a penalty kick, the second of her career.
Â
Carolina had the advantage in possession 61 percent to 39. Carolina outshot the Tigers, 13-5, including 10-2 in the second half. Seven of UNC's 13 shots came from non-starters.
Â
The Tar Heels had all six corner kicks in the match. Hensley made five saves; Dickey had one in registering her 25th career solo shutout.
