Meet the Freshman: Ty English

CHAPEL HILL – We are back again with the fourth installment of our "Meet the Freshman" series for the 2021 incoming class. This week, we highlight Canadian-born Ty English.
English is a 2021 Under Armor All-America, team captain, two-time national champion, and Midwest Player of the Year for Culver Academy.
Clifton: First off, when did you start playing lacrosse, and how did you get into it?
English: Well, growing up in Canada, I didn't know much about it, so a family friend introduced it to my family and me. I was about eight or nine when I started playing it. Since then, I have played box lacrosse and then transitioned to field lacrosse.
Clifton: Talk us through why you chose UNC?
English: I liked the focus on academics and athletics. When I went on my official visit, I loved the team environment and culture. The coaches were amazing to talk to and get to know. UNC is such a great school, and I value my academics highly. UNC seemed like an excellent place for me athletically and academically. I am fortunate to be recruited here and now play here.
Clifton: Talk about some of the relationships you've made with guys on the team, both with your incoming class and then some of the older guys on the team
English: Well, it's been mostly the freshman I have become very close with so far. All of us freshmen are brothers, and I enjoy bonding with them. Chase Mullins, Antonio DeMarco, and Cooper Frankenheimer are some guys I have hung out with and have trained with.
Clifton: For the fans that haven't seen you play, describe your playing style and what you bring to the team?
English: I would say I'm an all-around player. I can do it all and strive to do whatever the coach asks me to do. I have been able to play both offense and defense throughout my lacrosse career. I love being everywhere on the field and helping in whatever way I can.
Clifton: We still have a few more weeks until our first game, but what have you had to adjust to now that you're in a college lacrosse environment, and who are some of the guys that you've been working with during practice?
English: I would say the speed and having to make quick decisions. The guys are a lot stronger, and if you make a mistake, the other teams will quickly capitalize. The goalies are more skilled too, and it has allowed me to work on my shooting and focus on specific areas of the net.
Clifton: What's the most useless talent you have?
English: I can play guitar.
Clifton: What kind of music do you listen to when you are getting ready for a game?
English: I like to play some rock or rap music to get me pumped up. Meek Mill has some songs that get me hype and going.
Clifton: If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?
English: For Covid to go away, a National Championship, and win the lottery.
Clifton: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
English: I would say Hawaii because it's beautiful and warm there.
Clifton: Finally, looking forward to your college career, what are some goals you might have for yourself in terms of your college career?
English: Team-wise, I would say be a successful team, and hopefully, that will lead to an ACC and National Championship at the end of the season. I think I have a lot to prove, and I hope that leads to success in my career. Personally, I want to contribute as much as I can, and I hope to be the starter when the time comes.
