CHAPEL HILL—The University of North Carolina has announced its 2022 men's tennis schedule, the Tar Heels announced on Monday.
Carolina, ranked No. 14 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason national team rankings, will begin the season this week at the MLK Invitational, hosted by Georgia Tech, on January 14, 15 and 16.
UNC's first dual match will come at home at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center versus Bucknell on Sunday January 23.
The Tar Heels will defend their 2021 ITAÂ National Team Indoor Championship title beginning in Chapel Hill. They once again will host the ITA Kickoff Weekend, this year on January 29 and 30. UNC will host Northwestern on Saturday the 29th, then meet either Arizona State or Ohio State on Sunday the 30th. Â Should the Tar Heels win both of their matches that weekend, they will advance to the ITA Indoor Nationals in Seattle, Wash., on February 18-21.
Carolina's Atlantic Coast Conference slate includes home dates with Virginia Tech, Virginia, Louisville, Notre Dame, Clemson and Georgia Tech and road matches at Miami, Florida State, Duke, Boston College, Wake Forest and North Carolina State.
In addition to the ITA Kickoff Weekend and the opener against Bucknell, UNC also will host non-conference home matches against Wofford, NC Central, South Carolina and Columbia.
The 2022 men's and women's ACC Championships will be in Rome, Ga., from April 21-24.
The Tar Heels return several key members of last year's squad that finished the season ranked sixth nationally and reached the round of 16 in the NCAA Tournament, including seniors Benjamin Sigouin, Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger, junior Rinky Hijikata and sophomore Logan Zapp, among others. Â
Head coach Sam Paul also returns for his 29th season at the helm of the Tar Heel program. He enters the season with a career record of 523-213, and he has more wins than any active ACC coach.
