CHAPEL HILL – Freshman Lali Dekanoidze has been named the East Atlantic Gymnast League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday morning. This is the first weekly honor of her career.
Â
In Carolina's season opening tri-meet with Auburn and Bowling Green on Jan. 8, Dekanoidze competed in all four events. She posted a 39.325 to take her first all-around title, which was also the second-best season-opening all-around total in program history.
Â
The Matthews, N.C., native, shared the bars title with teammate Isabelle Schaefer, earning a 9.875. On vault, she tied for fourth place with a 9.825, while coming in third on beam with a 9.850. She finished the meet with a 9.775 on floor.Â
Â
Dekanoidze currently ranks No. 11 in the NCAA in the all-around and No. 15 on bars.Â
Â
"This is a terrific start for Lali," head coach Danna Durante said. "She was a seasoned and successful competitor on the Level 10 stage, and she has picked up right where she left off. She's steady and consistent in training every day. We're excited about what she's bringing to this 2022 Tar Heel team as she's an integral part of what we are building."
Â
Up next, the Tar Heels travel to Piscataway, N.J. on Jan. 15 for a quad meet with Rutgers, NC State and New Hampshire.
