Beginning on Sunday, UNC will play its first four matches and seven of its first eight at home to start the dual match portion of the season.
Next weekend, Carolina will host the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Chapel Hill. On Saturday January 29, the Tar Heels will play Northwestern and Arizona State will meet Ohio State. The winners of the Saturday's matches will then face off on Sunday for the opportunity to advance to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Seattle. The Tar Heels are the defending champions of the event, having won their second indoor national title in 2021.
The 2022 Tar Heel roster features both experience and new talent and is led by a trio of veteran seniors in Brian Cernoch, Mac Kiger and Benjamin Sigouin. Other key returnees include sophomores Logan Zapp and Peter Murphy and juniors Anuj Watane and Mark Dillon.
Joining the squad this spring is senior Henry Lieberman, a Fayetteville, N.C., native and transfer from Charlotte. Gifted freshmen Casey Kania and Chris Li round out the roster.
There are definite opportunities for new faces in the lineup this season, as the Tar Heels lost experienced talent in William Blumberg, Josh Peck, Simon Soendergaard and sophomore Rinky Hijikata to graduation and the professional ranks after finishing sixth nationally in 2021 and posting a record of 21-4.
