
Eight Tar Heels Named To Women's Soccer All-ACC Academic Team

CHAPEL HILL – Eight Tar Heels have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team for women's soccer, announced Thursday by the league. The honor recognizes players who excelled academically and athletically during the 2021 season.
Rachel Jones was named to the team for the fourth time, Maycee Bell was voted onto the squad for a third year while Claudia Dickey, Rachel Dorwart and Sam Meza were honored for a second time. Sophomore Avery Patterson along with freshmen Emily Colton and Emily Murphy each made the team for the first time.
Voted Third Team Academic All-America by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Jones earned her bachelor's degree in public policy before enrolling in the UNC School of Law for the 2021 fall semester.
An exercise and sport science major, Bell was also named to the United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-America First-Team Scholar earlier this season. She played in 17 games, logged 1,445 minutes (85.0 mpg) and anchored a defense that allowed only 13 goals in 18 games and helped the Tar Heels record seven shutouts.
Colton, Dorwart and Meza are also pursuing a degree in exercise and sport science. Colton led the Tar Heels with seven goals while Dorwart was fourth with four goals. Meza scored two goals during the season.
Dickey was a psychology major and an all-conference and all-region performer. She ranked fourth in the ACC in goals against average (0.684) and posted seven shutouts which was fifth-most in the league.
Murphy, a global studies major, played in 15 games during as rookie and was the team's leading scorer with 16 points on five goals and six assists.
Florida State's Gabby Carle, was named the ACC Women's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0-grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
