CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Four Tar Heels have been named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Team for men's soccer, announced Thursday by the league. The honor recognizes players who excelled academically and athletically during the 2021 season.
Senior Tim Schels and junior Victor Olofsson were named to the team for the second time, while junior Riley Thomas and freshman Tega Ikoba were honored for the first time.
Schels and Thomas are each majoring in exercise and sport science, while Olofsson is pursuing a degree in business administration and economics.
An All-ACC Freshman Team performer, Ikoba was a computer science major before he signed a Homegrown Contract with the Portland Timbers of the MLS after the season. He played in 19 games and made 10 starts, tallying a team-high 14 points with six goals and two assists.
Schels tied for the team lead in assists with three and scored a goal against UNCW and New Hampshire.
Thomas started all 17 games he played and was one of five players on the team to play more 1,500 minutes. He recorded his only point of the season with an assist against Campbell.
Olofsson played a total of 567 minutes in 14 games, registering his lone point of the season with an assist at Notre Dame.
Clemson's Oskar Ågren was named the ACC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September of 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0-grade point average for their careers, as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.
Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.
