
Five Wrestlers Win Titles At Appalachian Open

BOONE, N.C. -Â The No. 24 North Carolina wrestling team concluded the weekend winning five titles Saturday at the Appalachian Open.

Five UNC wrestlers won championships, including Joe Heilmann at 133, No. 6 Austin O'Connor at 157, Isaias Estrada at 165, No. 14 Clay Lautt at 174, and round out the order No. 21 Gavin Kane at 184.

Heilmann started the day with a pin before reeling off three straight decisions to take the 133 title. O'Connor dominated the competition using three falls and one technical fall to take the title at 157. His third match of the day marked his 100th career win. Isaias Estrada looked impressive in the first tournament title win of his career. He clinched the title with a solid 13-2 major decision.

Lautt improved his record to 11-3 in today's outing. He earned two falls and a decision before wrapping the tournament up with a first-period pin to take the 174 title. Kane dominated early with a major decision and decision before notching the 184 title with a 12-3 major decision.Â

Senior Brandon Whitman had an impressive showing collecting three wins before falling in the finals to place second overall. Cade Lautt finished third while Mark Chaid looked solid, placing fifth overall.

North Carolina returns to action Friday, Feb. 4, hosting No. 19 Pittsburgh in ACC action. The Tar Heels and Panthers meet at 7 p.m. at Carmichael Arena.
