Meet The Freshman: Edwin Shy
January 3, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL – Another season of North Carolina men's lacrosse is just around the corner, which means it is time to introduce the new class of incoming freshmen. First up is Edwin Shy, the Memphis, Tennessee product, who was a team captain, All-Region selection, and a 2019 State Champion at Memphis University School.
Shy jumps to the collegiate scene as he looks to enter the fold in a young midfield unit for the Tar Heels.
Clifton: When did you start playing lacrosse, and how did you get into it?
Shy: I started playing in fifth grade. Some people in my area started playing it, and I got interested. I decided to try it out because some of my friends played lacrosse instead of baseball. I thought it was a cool sport and have played it ever since.
Clifton: Why did you choose to come to UNC?
Shy: First off, I liked the school and the academics. UNC was always on my list regardless of whether I played sports there or not. I like the area and how Chapel Hill is centered around the university. I am also very comfortable here, and I like everybody around me.
Clifton: How excited will you be when you first put on the Carolina jersey and run out on the field to represent the Tar Heels?
Shy: It's going to be so hype. I can't explain the feeling. Even just putting on the jersey for media day, I got excited. It's just going to be a great experience overall.
Clifton: Who are some of your teammates you have been working with who have helped you get better?
Shy: Definitely my roommates Cooper Frankenheimer and Antonio DeMarco. We hang out a lot and do stuff together. The first week we got on campus, we all went to the indoor facility and started shooting. Pretty much all of the freshmen on the team because we are all pretty close and push each other as much as we can.
Clifton: What has your interaction been like with teammates and coaches since you have been on campus?
Shy: It's been great so far. Coach Breschi is the man, and he is such a great guy. He has been incredible to all of us freshman our first semester. He continuously checks in on us, not necessarily just about lacrosse, but about our family and academics as well. Coach Metzbower is a great help especially being on the offensive side of the ball. Also, Coach Unterstein and Coach Fox are great guys to be around, and they are hilarious.
Clifton: Talk about your playing style and what you bring to the team here at UNC?
Shy: I like to play fast and run around the field a lot. I think my speed is my biggest asset. I want to get a little stronger to take on heavier checks. I also like to be smart with the ball and keep my head up so I can make the right decision in certain situations.
Clifton: What is something you can eat every day and never get tired of?
Shy: I could probably eat chicken alfredo every single day and not get sick of it.
Clifton: What celebrity or famous athlete would you like to meet?
Shy: I would say, Tom Brady. I have always been a fan of him. I love how he plays and how he carries himself on and off the field.
Clifton: If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would it be?
Shy: Probably anywhere that has the nicest beach. I love going to the beach.
Clifton: Finally, what do you look to accomplish individually and as a team during your time here at UNC?
Shy: Well, from a team perspective, obviously winning the ACC and then the National Championship. I think we can do that this year as well in the coming years. We have a great group of guys this year and moving forward. As far as individually, I want to produce points for the team. Anything that makes the team better, I'll do it. Of course, I want to score a bunch of goals and be an All-American, but I want to continue my development as a player.
