Inside the Numbers (ITN) is back for the 2022 season and will continue to keep Tar Heel football fans up to date with interesting news and numbers from the gridiron, and will include some of the top social media posts following each game.
Caleb Hood had 124 all-purpose yards last Saturday against Miami. HIGHLIGHTS FROM HEELS FOURTH-STRAIGHT WIN OVER HURRICANES
• Carolina put together its longest drive of the year that consumed 8:21 of the fourth quarter over 18 plays and 81 yards that culminated with a 19-yard FG from Noah Burnette.
• The Tar Heels gave up seven points in the second half, a week removed from shutting out Virginia Tech in the second half.
• Carolina surrendered only 41 rushing yards to Miami, the fewest since Virginia ran for 24 yards in 2021.
• Caleb Hood started at running back for the second-straight game and had a career-high 13 carries for a game-high 74 yards. The Tar Heels out-gained the Hurricanes on the ground, 161-41.
• Power Echols recorded a career-high 14 tackles to top his previous best 11 stops earlier this season against Notre Dame.
• Cedric Gray also notched double figures in tackles with 13 stops, his fourth game with 10 or more tackles this season. He also forced his second fumble of his career in the fourth quarter.
• DeAndre Boykins is the first Tar Heel to have an interception and a sack in the same game since Jeremiah Gemmel at Pitt in 2021.
MAYE AND BOYKINS NAMED ACC PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
Sophomore DeAndre Boykins earned ACC Defensive Back of the Week after his outstanding performance last week in the 27-24 victory over Miami. He notched the game-saving interception for the Tar Heels with 10 seconds remaining with the Hurricanes driving to potentially tie the game or take the lead. Boykins added a sack and four tackles.
Drake Maye was voted ACC Rookie of the Week for the fourth time this season. He completed 19 of 28 passes for 309 yards and two touchdowns and added 53 rushing yards to compile 362 total yards on the night.
NATION'S TOP LINEBACKING DUO Cedric Gray and Power Echols are the top tackling duo in college football this fall. Gray ranks third nationally and leads the ACC with 11.3 tackles per game, while Power Echols is fifth in the league and 20th in the country with 9.8 stops a game.
The standout linebackers are vying to become the first Tar Heel to average double figures in tackles since Durrell Mapp in 2007. Mapp ranked second in the ACC and 10th in the nation with 11.0 tackles per game. Additionally, Cole Holcomb was the last UNC player to lead the ACC in tackles when he had 9.6 tackles per game in 2018.
