Maye Added To Maxwell Award Watch List

PHILADELPHIA - On the strength of his outstanding start to the 2022 season, North Carolina red-shirt freshman quarterback Drake Maye has been added to the watch list for the Maxwell Award, presented annually to the outstanding player in college football.
Maye leads the country with 146 points responsible for behind his 24 total touchdowns. His 21 passing touchdowns are the third most nationally, while his 368.5 yards of total offense per game is the second most in the nation. The Huntersville, North Carolina, product is also third in passing efficiency (185.1) and eighth in passing yards per game (317.2).
He leads the Atlantic Coast Conference in all five aforementioned statistical categories.
Maye has been the ACC Rookie of the Week four times, the ACC Quarterback of the week twice and has earned weekly plaudits this fall from the Davey O'Brien Award, the Manning Award and the Maxwell Award.
Players added to the watch list were selected by the Maxwell Football Club national selection committee and these players will be eligible for consideration as semifinalists for each of these respective awards. Semifinalists will be announced on Monday Nov. 1 and voting will commence on Nov. 2
Maye is one of four players from the ACC added to the Maxwell Award watch list. The others include quarterbacks D.J. Uiagalelei (Clemson) and Garrett Shrader (Syracuse), and Pittsburgh running back Israel Abanikanda.
Carolina wide receiver Josh Downs was named to the Maxwell Award watch list in the preseason. He leads the team with 28 receptions, 299 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
The Tar Heels (5-1, 2-0) visit Duke (4-2, 1-1) on Saturday at 8 p.m. on ACC Network.
