Hansen's Penalty Kick Gives No. 2 Women's Soccer Win Over Wake Forest
October 14, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Senior Tori Hansen nailed her second penalty kick of the season and the defense made it stand up to lead No. 2 North Carolina to a 1-0 victory over Wake Forest on Senior Night Friday at Dorrance Field.
Hansen struck a high, right-footed shot and Wake Forest goalkeeper Kaitlyn Parks dove to the wrong side to concede the goal in the 49th minute.
"PKs are something that has been a sore spot for me," Hansen said. "The one that I did miss was tough. And so, I think just going up there and being confident in myself was important."
The win moves the Tar Heels (12-3, 5-2 ACC) into a tie for second place in the ACC with Duke, three points behind front-running Florida State.
Freshman forward Maddie Dahlien drew the foul to set up Hansen's goal. Dahlien took the pass from Ally Sentnor, raced past her defender, and was knocked down from behind by Caiya Hanks inside the penalty area.
Minutes earlier, Dahlien had another scoring opportunity inside the box, but Parks blocked her attempt and Deacons kicked the deflection out of bounds. Those were two of the Tar Heels' four second half shots.
"When the second half began, we were all over them," UNC Head Coach Anson Dorrance said. "Then all of the sudden they took over, and it wasn't like they took against our reserves, they took over against our starting unit. I give [Wake Forest coach] Tony [da Luz] and his staff full credit because they were tough to play against."
Wake Forest (9-4-2, 3-4) held Carolina to a season-low 10 shots, but the Tar Heels still out-shot their opponent by three and had a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal.
Kaitlyn Parks saved four shots for the Demon Deacons , while Emmie Allen did not register a save in posting her fourth solo shutout of the year.
The Demon Deacons nearly tied it in the 59th minute, but the Tar Heels' defense cleared Hannah Johnson's shot out of the box.
"Even though they were in our end of a bit, they didn't have any sort of clear chances," Dorrance said. "We had more clear chances than they did to put the game away. So, I certainly feel good about that."
UNC returns to action Thursday, Oct. 20, against No. 4 Florida State in Tallahassee. The match is slated for 8 p.m. and will be televised on the ACC Network.
