Wrestling Opens 2022-23 With Wrestle-Offs

CHAPEL HILL – The North Carolina wrestling team was set and ready to go for the 2022-23 season as it hosted the Carolina Blue and White Wrestle-Offs at Carmichael Arena on Friday night.
"We saw a lot of good competition tonight, and all the preparation is paying off," said head coach Coleman Scott. "Our season schedule features some strong programs and seeing our guys get ready and look this sharp so soon is going to get them there."
The Tar Heels wrestled nine bouts in a dual-style format that set the Carolina Blue Team to bout against the White Team, with Carolina Blue winning 24-12.
The 125-pound matchup featured Jack Wagner for Carolina Blue versus White representative Spencer Moore, with Wagner taking the decision 3-2. At 133, Joey Melendez faced Jaime Hernandez with Melendez winning the bout by fall. Also decided by fall, Lachlan McNeill took the win for Carolina Blue in the 141-pound category over Leo Maguigad.
In the 149-pound category, Jayden Scott won for Carolina Blue in a decision over Danny Nini. Freshman Nicholas Fea for the White team defeated Gino Esposito 9-6 in 165. Clay Lautt, senior captain, took the win by decision in 174 for Carolina Blue over Isaias Estrada.
The final three bouts of the night started with the 184-pound category, where Gavin Kane won by fall over Blah Dahnweih. The 197-pound was won by decision 5-3 with team White Max Shaw defeating Cade Lautt. The final bout of the night pitted senior Brandon Whitman against freshman Aydin Guttridge, with Whitman winning by decision, 3-2.
The Tar Heels open their dual meet season on the road versus Campbell on Nov. 11, then begin the home season versus Michigan at Boshamer Stadium in Chapel Hill on Nov. 13.
