Men’s Soccer Hosts No. 18 Virginia Friday For Senior Night, Regular Season Finale
October 27, 2022 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina men's soccer team, which returns home following a four-game road stretch, is set to host No. 18 Virginia on Friday night for the regular season finale. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET at Dorrance Field.
Prior to the start of the match, the Tar Heels will celebrate Senior Day by honoring their nine seniors: Cameron Fisher, Milo Garvanian, Hilli Goldhar, Julian Hinojosa, Victor Olofsson, James Person, Marco Saborio-Perez, Sebastian Schacht and Tim Schels.
Carolina enters the contest with a 7-4-4 mark on the year, including a 2-2-3 in Atlantic Coast Conference play, and Virginia is 9-4-2 (5-1-1). The Tar Heels are currently tied with Notre Dame for fourth in the Coastal Division while the Cavaliers rank first.
UNC is coming off a dominant 3-0 win – its seventh shutout of the year – Tuesday evening at William & Mary behind goals from Yaya Bakayoko, Ernest Bawa and Sam Williams. Eight different players have recorded at least one goal this season, led by Garvanian with a team-high four goals, four assists, 12 points and 10 shots on goal.
UNC has continued to lock down on defense throughout the 2022 campaign, keeping its competitors to six shots or fewer in eight of their 15 contests and 10 or fewer in all but one. A staple on the Tar Heels' stalwart back line is Til Zinnhardt, one of only two outfield players in the ACC who has logged a full 90 minutes in all contests played so far.
Virginia landed at No. 18 in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, also tabbed at No. 15 by Top Drawer Soccer and No. 22 by College Soccer News. The Cavaliers are paced by sophomore Leo Afonso, who was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 25 and leads the ACC with 58 shots and 3.87 shots per game.
Friday's clash will be the 89th match played between the two teams in program history with the Tar Heels holding a narrow 42-36-10 edge in the all-time series, including a 23-15-4 mark in Chapel Hill and a 7-2-3 record under head coach Carlos Somoano. The last meeting was a 2-1 Carolina victory on Sept. 25, 2021, after two goals in the final 13 minutes.
