Women's Soccer Downs NC State For 400th Home Win
October 9, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Emily Murphy and Avery Patterson each scored, and No. 5 North Carolina beat NC State 2-0 on Sunday afternoon at Dorrance Field, recording the program's 400th all-time home victory.
The Tar Heels have played 450 games at home sites since the program began in 1979 and has amassed a record of 400-32-18 in those games. Carolina has outscored its opponents by a 1,714-232 margin in those 450 games.
Murphy provided Carolina (11-3, 4-2 ACC) with all the offense it needed by heading a twice deflected corner kick into the back of the net in the 43rd minute.
"It would've been a completely different halftime talk if we hadn't scored at the death of the first half, so that was a very important goal.
"I was pleased with our performance from beginning to end. Every now and again like we did against Pitt when you shoot well. Today we did not shoot well. The first goal was sort of a garbage thing in the goal mouth. The second goal was magnificent. Avery buries it and separates us early in the second half."
Patterson scored on a strike from 22 yards out in the 46th minute to put the Tar Heels up by two goals 23 seconds into the second half.
"We always talk about how one game is basically two," Patterson said. "The first half is our first game, and the second half is our second. We come out in the second half with the same mentality as we did in the first. I got the ball around midfield, saw an opportunity, and passed it to Ally Sentnor – I knew she was going to pass it back to me.
"I think [shooting near post] gets keepers sometimes. They don't think you're going to go there, so when you do they're surprised. I think I caught her off guard."
UNC fired off a season-high 29 shots, including 12 on frame, while holding NC State (7-5-3, 2-4) to just three shots. Maria Echezarreta made a career-high 10 saves for the Wolfpack, while Emmie Allen recorded her third solo shutout of the season, denying both shots faced.
Carolina returns to action Friday, Oct. 14, against Wake Forest. It'll be the Tar Heels' final regular season game at Dorrance Field and the final home game for nine Tar Heel seniors. The match is slated for 7 p.m.
