Women's Soccer Eases Past Old Dominion, 5-0, In NCAA First Round
November 12, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Ally Sentnor scored twice and No. 2 seed North Carolina cruised to a 5-0 victory over Old Dominion in the first round of the 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Tournament at Dorrance Field Saturday night.
UNC will now host a pair of second round NCAA Tournament games next Thursday, Nov. 17, with No. 3 Stanford playing No. 6 BYU and North Carolina facing No. 7 Georgia. The winners of the two second round games on Thursday will play in the NCAA third round next Saturday at Dorrance Field.
Sentnor took a pass from Emily Colton just six minutes into the match to give the Tar Heels (16-4-1) all the offense it needed.
Maddie Dahlien notched her second goal of the season, scoring in the 29th minute to give Carolina a 2-0 halftime lead.
Avery Patterson found the net in the 49th minute with her 11th goal of the campaign to stretch the lead to 3-0 before Sentnor polished off her brace in the 60th minute and Lauren Wrigley finished off the game with her first goal in the 89th minute.
Tori Hansen assisted on Dahlien's and Patterson's goals.
"That's the piece we had to get right," UNC head coach Anson Dorrance said. "For the two games in the ACC Tournament we scored one and that's not good enough. Today we got our act together.
"I loved that different people were scoring. We know we can rely on Avery Patterson, she's proven it all season. Sentnor stepped up, Dahlien stepped up and these are critical pieces for us. We're going to play teams that can score against us and we're going to have to have the capacity to score more than one. Today was a demonstration of our potential."
Carolina outshot the Monarchs (9-9-3) 15-4 with an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.
Emmie Allen saved two of the four shots she faced for Carolina. Emily Bredek saved three shots for the Monarchs.
