Tar Heels Set Record Graduation Success Rate
November 18, 2022 | Academics
Graduation Success Rates for University of North Carolina student-athletes over the past four years are the highest on record, climbing three points to 91 percent, the third straight year the Tar Heels equaled or established their highest-ever multi-year graduation rate.
In addition, the single-year GSR was 93 percent, an increase of five points, tying UNC's highest in the last decade.
The NCAA's Graduation Success Rates measure graduation rates over a six-year period, factoring student-athletes who were on scholarship their first year and graduate from their respective university or leave the program via transfer to another university or professional opportunities while in good academic standing.
The data released today includes the 2012-13 through 2015-16 incoming freshmen classes.
Fourteen of Carolina's teams have multi-year GSRs of 100 percent including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's fencing, men's golf, gymnastics, women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's tennis and volleyball.
Another 10 sports have GSRs of at least 90 percent, including men's and women's cross country, field hockey, men's lacrosse, rowing, softball and men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field.
Men's soccer's multi-year GSR improved 12 points to 100 percent, the first time the program has reached the 100 percent mark. The women's soccer team also posted 100 percent for the first time since 2007.
Gymnastics hit 100 percent for the 18th time in 18 years. Other notable streaks of 100 percent multi-year GSRs include women's swimming and diving (14 straight years), women's fencing (13 consecutive), volleyball (12 straight and 14 overall), men's tennis (11 straight), women's lacrosse (six in a row and nine overall), women's tennis (four straight and 14 overall), women's basketball and men's golf (three consecutive), and men's basketball and men's swimming and diving (two years in a row).
The baseball team's GSR improved to 85 percent, its highest in seven seasons and men's cross country/track and field (91%) topped 90 percent for the first time in five years.
Twenty-one of Carolina's teams met or exceeded the national average for their respective sports.
In addition, the single-year GSR was 93 percent, an increase of five points, tying UNC's highest in the last decade.
