SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Carolina volleyball team defeated Notre Dame in straight sets in Purcell Pavilion on Friday night. The victory was the Tar Heels' first sweep over the Irish since Nov. 21, 2014.

Tallying her team-best twelfth double-double of the season, Mabrey Shaffmaster led the match with 15 kills and 11 digs.

Maddy May defended the Tar Heel backrow with a match-best 16 digs, recording her eighth-straight match with double-digit digs to go with two aces.

Kaya Merkler and Skyy Howard each had eight kills, with Merkler recording a team-best four blocks.

In her return to Notre Dame, Charley Niego tallied nine kills and six digs and a pair of aces.

Anita Babic, who played in the first and second set, had 21 assists, while Ella Bostic tallied 17 assists in the third set.

Carolina (15-9, 7-6 ACC) out-hit the Irish (9-14, 4-9 ACC) .196 to .099 in the match.

Set One – UNC: 25, Notre Dame: 19
Charley Niego, Skyy Howard and Mabrey Shaffmaster each led the Tar Heel offense in the first set with three kills apiece, while Anita Babic had a team-best seven digs. Four different Tar Heels had an ace in the set: Niego, May, Shaffmaster and Babic, while Notre Dame had none in the frame. Carolina out-hit the Irish .167-.105 in the set.

Set Two – UNC: 25, Notre Dame: 16
Set two was Carolina's most dominate set of the match, with the Tar Heels out-attacking Notre Dame .229-.000. Niego and Shaffmaster combined for 11 of Carolina's 17 kills, while Babic had 14 assists. May had a match-best eight digs in the set.

Set Three – UNC: 25, Notre Dame: 22
Set three proved to be the closest of the match, with Carolina just outhitting Notre Dame .188-184. Shaffmaster led the team with six kills, while Merkler had four kills on .429 hitting. Liv Mogridge and Howard also contributed three kills apiece. Merkler had Carolina's sole block in the set.
