Volleyball Falls On The Road To No. 5 Louisville, 3-1

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The Carolina volleyball team (15-10, 7-7 ACC) fell on the road to No. 5 Louisville (22-2, 7-1 ACC) in four sets in a tough-fought battle on Sunday afternoon in L&N Federal Credit Union. Mabrey Shaffmaster led the Tar Heel offense with 16 kills, two aces and seven digs.
Liv Mogridge led the Carolina block with her fifth five-block performance of the season, matching her career-best, while Skyy Howard had three blocks to go with eight kills.
Maddy May had 11 digs, her ninth-straight match with double-digit digs, and
Anita Babic tallied her fifth career double-double and second in the last three matches with 36 assists and 11 digs.
Charley Niego recorded her twelfth double-double of the season, tied with Shaffmaster for most on the team, with 13 kills and a team-best 14 digs.
The Cardinals outhit Carolina .217 to .155 and out blocked the Tar Heels 12-7.5, but Carolina won the service ace battle, 6-5. Louisville committed a season-high 14 service errors.
Set One: Carolina – 25, Louisville: 17
Carolina came out hot to open the match, outhitting the Cardinals .455 to .231. Charley Niego and Mabrey Shaffmaster led the match with six kills apiece, while Niego and Liv Mogridge each had a pair of block assists. Anita Babic had 13 assists and led the team with four digs. The Tar Heels held the lead the entirety of the set.
Set Two: Carolina – 17, Louisville: 25
Set two started off tight, but as the set went on, the Tar Heels struggled offensively. With 10 attack errors, Carolina was outhit by the Cardinals to .419-.057. Niego, Shaffmaster and Kaya Merkler each had a pair of kills in the frame.
Set Three: Carolina – 20, Louisville: 25
Despite Carolina opening the set with a 13-8 lead, the Cardinals were able to chip away and then, eventually, take the lead from the Tar Heels. Carolina hit just .032 in the set, while Louisville hit .192. Shaffmaster had five kills and two aces, while May and Niego each had five digs. Babic recorded 10 assists.
Set Four: Carolina – 23, Louisville: 25
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 13 to 8 lead, but the Tar Heels brought it to within four late in the frame to make it 21-18. Carolina then reeled off four straight points, with a May ace tying the match up at 22 all. Louisville went on a 3-0 run to end the set and take the match.

The two teams will rematch in one week, with Carolina hosting the No. 5 Cardinals on No. 13 at 1 p.m. in Carmichael Arena.
