Wrestling Drops Dual Thursday Evening

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The No. 17-ranked North Carolina wrestling program fell to Appalachian State, Thursday evening in Carmichael Arena.
In front of a crowd of 406 for the final home dual of the 2022 calendar year, the Tar Heels earned win in five matches, with victories at 141, 157, 184, 197, and 285, respectively.
Starting the matchup with the Mountaineers at 125-pounds, Carolina collected its first win of the evening with Lachlan McNeil's 14-5 major decision at 141. Just two matches later, Austin O'Connor made his season debut for UNC, collecting a 9-4 decision.
The Tar Heels would win the final three matches of the night, at 184, 197, and 285-pounds. Gavin Kane jumped out to an early lead in the 184-pound showdown, using four first-round takedowns en route to his 8-6 decision triumph. Following at 197, Max Shaw also raced out to an early lead in the first period, on his way to a 6-2 decision win. Closing out the night against Appalachian State, Tar Heel heavyweight Brandon Whitman battled to seal the 3-2 decision.
Carolina wrestling returns Monday, for the first day of the Collegiate Wrestling Duals in New Orleans, La. The Tar Heels face Central Michigan to begin the two-day event at 5 PM Eastern, closing out the night against Penn State (9 PM ET).
