Lacrosse Travels To San Francisco For Annual Networking Trip
December 21, 2022 | Men's Lacrosse, Women's Lacrosse, Student-Athlete Development
Three days in San Francisco, California, resulted in a transformative experience for University of North Carolina lacrosse student-athletes, with select members of both the men's and women's programs partaking in various networking opportunities from Dec. 14-16.
The annual trip was part of Heels Helping Heels, an extensive career and mentoring program. The mission of the program is to leverage the extensive Carolina network to allow student-athletes to lay the foundation of their professional careers to be successful after graduation.
Anna Barton, Olivia Dirks, Elizabeth Hillman, Bailey Horne, Nicole Humphrey, Briana Lantuh, Livi Lawton, Emily Nalls, Mason Paradine and Amelia Sheehan were in attendance from the women's team while men's representatives included Paul Barton, Maxwell Cooney, Evan Egan, Jack Grubbs, Leif Hagerup, Quintin O'Connell, Will Pettit and Lance Tillman.
Head coaches Joe Breschi and Jenny Levy, as well as men's associate head coach David Metzbower, women's graduate assistant Andie Aldave and lacrosse's director of engagement and development Kara Cannizzaro, were also in attendance. Prominent Carolina alumni Harris Barton and Jen Halsey Evans helped facilitate the trip through their Carolina network.
Â
"My favorite part of the trip was seeing how deep the Carolina family is," said Sheehan, a redshirt sophomore. "At most companies we visited, there was an individual that went to UNC and they made such an effort to make us feel at home."
Student-athletes were exposed to various industries and met with professionals within the sectors of sports, corporate real estate, finance, advertising and more. The group visited Levi's Stadium, Google, Ripple, SoFi, TMG Partners, Electronic Arts, Kleiner Perkins and Goodby, Silverstein & Partners during the trip.
The Tar Heels left San Francisco with great memories and an even greater network – as well as several key takeaways they will be able to use long after their time in Chapel Hill.Â
"My biggest takeaway of the trip was the importance of using your network to help advance your professional career," said sophomore Paul Barton. "You learn important values for the business world as a student-athlete through your sport. Employers love those characteristics, so utilizing the network that comes with lacrosse, as well as at UNC, is critical."
