December 8, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Ahead of the 2023 season, a trio of University of North Carolina women's lacrosse players were featured as Inside Lacrosse's Top 50 Returning Players.
Headlining the Tar Heels is Caitlyn Wurzburger at No. 10, followed closely by Emily Nalls (No. 14) and Brooklyn Walker-Welch (No. 18). All three players were instrumental in UNC's undefeated national championship season last year.
Of the 21 programs with at least one student-athlete named to Inside Lacrosse's list, Carolina is tied with Maryland for the most in the top 20.Â
Additionally, a pair of new Tar Heels were featured as Inside Lacrosse's Top 10 Incoming Freshmen for 2023 as Marissa White checked in at No. 2 and Caroline Godine was ranked No. 8. UNC had the highest freshman ranking among Atlantic Coast Conference programs and was tied for the second most of any school with athletes included on the list.
A Third Team All-America and All-ACC Second Team selection as a sophomore, Wurzburger notched a career-high 76 points in 2022 behind 34 goals and a career-best 42 assists. She also recorded five hat tricks and notched five goals throughout the NCAA Tournament before leading the United States to a silver medal at the World Games in August.
Now in her senior year, Nalls was a staple on one of the best defenses in the country and led UNC with a career-high 49 ground balls a season ago en route to garnering Second Team All-America and All-ACC Second Team honors. She earned bronze at the World Championship while representing England in July, too.Â
Also a key member of UNC's defense that limited opponents to just 8.5 goals per game, Walker-Welch earned All-America Honorable Mention and ACC All-Freshman Team recognition during her first year in Chapel Hill. This past summer, she earned gold and silver, respectively, with Canada at the World Games and World Championship.
White, a midfielder, arrived in Chapel Hill as a high school All-American and participated in the Under Armour All-American game this past summer. She scored 100 goals as a freshman at Agnes Irwin School, which ranked second in the Philadelphia area.Â
Like White, Godine also received All-America honors and competed at the All-American game in August. The attacker tallied 75 goals and 104 assists during her high school career at McDonogh School (no sophomore season due to COVID-19), including 35 goals and 48 assists as a senior.
