Downs Tabbed Second-Team All-America By FWAA
December 9, 2022 | Football
CHAPEL HILL – Junior WR Josh Downs was tabbed a second-team All-American by the Football Writers Association of American, the organization announced on Friday. Downs is a two-time All-ACC performer, a two-time Biletnikoff semifinalist and one of UNC's all-time best wide outs.
A two-year starter for UNC, Downs ranks third all-time at UNC in receptions with 202, fourth in receiving yards with 2,483, and second all-time in TD catches with 22. He is UNC's single-season record holder in both catches (101) and receiving yards (1,335).
Downs put together another monster season in 2002, despite missing two games earlier this season. He eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the second consecutive season with 1,029 on 94 receptions and 11 TDs. His 11 TDs are tied for second in the ACC and are tied for seventh nationally. The 94 receptions lead the ACC and rank third among Power 5 receivers. He's posted six games of 100 or more yards including a season-best 166 yards at Virginia.
With Downs over 1,000 yards again this year, UNC has produced five 1,000-yard receivers over the last four seasons, which is tied for the most nationally with Alabama. Dyami Brown did it two times in 2019 and '20, while Dazz Newsome reached the mark in 2019. And now, Downs has done it in each of the last two seasons.
