Wrestling Drops Road Dual To No. 7 Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, VA. - The No. 21 North Carolina wrestling team dropped a hard-fought match to No. 7 Virginia Tech 23-11 on Friday night inside Cassell Coliseum.

The match started at 125, with Spencer Moore taking on No. 20 Sam Latona. Moore would battle but could not overcome the pressure from Latona as he fell 10-5 by decision. At 133, Joe Heilmann dropped his bout to No. 5 Korbin Myers, 8-2, to give the Hokies the early 6-0 match lead. Kizhan Clarke ranked ninth at 141 pounds grinded out a 6-2 win over No. 22 Collin Gerardi.

In the 149 bout, No. 5 Bryce Andonian capitalized on a near fall and takedown to take the 16-6 major decision over Zach Sherman. No. 5 Austin O'Connor attacked the whole match and quickly earned the 25-10 decision over No. 26 Connor Brady. True freshman Isaias Estrada faced Clayton Ulrey in his dual debut and dropped the 4-2 decision in a hard-fought 165 bout.

At 174 No. 9 Clay Lautt dropped a 6-2 decision to No. 3 Mekhi Lewis. The 184 bout was intense throughout as No. 18 Gavin Kane picked up the upset win over No. 10 Hunter Bolen by way of a 3-1 sudden victory. Mark Chaid moved up to 197 and fell to No. 31 Dakota Howard in a 13-5 major decision. Brandon Whitman battled throughout but dropped the 5-1 decision to No. 14 Nathan Traxler to the end the night.

Next Friday, the Tar Heels return to action when they travel to Raleigh to take on rival No.5 NC State. The match is set for 7 p.m. and will air live on ACC Network.
