Softball Earns Victory Over Stetson, Falls To Monmouth

LEESBURG, Fla. – The Tar Heels split their doubleheader on the second day of the Spring Games Tournament on Saturday afternoon, falling 2-0 to Monmouth to open the day, before securing a 3-1 victory over Stetson.
Hannah George earned her fourth victory of the season in the circle against the Hatters, allowing just one run and three hits in seven innings of work, while striking out seven. The senior remains undefeated.
Junior Katie Perkins had a career-best three RBIs against Stetson, going two-of-two from the plate and hitting her first career triple.
Carlie Myrtle earned her first career start against the Hawks, and despite the loss, the freshman threw a complete game with nine strikeouts.
GAME ONE: Monmouth 2, UNC: 0
The first game of the day for Carolina was a low scoring affair. Monmouth was able to plate a run in the top of the first inning to give the Hawks an early one-run lead.
Monmouth held onto that one-run advantage until the top of the seventh. The Hawks opened the inning with a double to left field, before the batter scored on a wild pitch.
Taylor Greene drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tar Heels were unable to get any other players on base. Monmouth out-hit Carolina 7-3 in the game, despite the Tar Heels getting seven on base.
GAME TWO: UNC: 3, Stetson: 1
After a scoreless first inning, the Tar Heels were able to get on the board against the Hatters in the second. Skyler Brooks got the offense going with the first hit of the game, a single to the pitcher, before advancing to second on a wild pitch. Greene then drew her second walk of the day.
Perkins then tripled to right field, scoring Greene and Brooks to finishing the inning up 2-0. Stetson drew a walk to open the third, and then, with two outs, the Hatters strung together back-to-back singles, plating a run to cut the lead, 2-1.
In the bottom of the fourth, Carolina added to its lead. Perkins plated Skyler Brooks, who had reached on a fielder's choice, going ahead 3-1.
The Heels were able hold the Hatters scoreless in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to secure the victory.
Carolina is now 6-3 on the season.
