10-Run Fifth Inning Carries Softball Past North Carolina A&T

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Carolina softball team earned a 10-2 victory over North Carolina A&T in their home opener on Wednesday night, scoring 10 runs in the fifth inning to run-rule the Aggies.
Six different Tar Heels recorded hits in the win, including a career-best three hits from sophomore Skyler Brooks and two from redshirt sophomore Kianna Jones. One of Jones' hits was a three-run home run over the centerfield wall, her third home run of the season. Jones is the only Tar Heel to hit the long ball so far in 2022.
Freshman Lilli Backes (2-2) earned the victory in the circle, allowing just one earned run in three innings pitched with five strikeouts.
After a scoreless first, North Carolina A&T opened the second inning with a solo home run to go up 1-0. Brooks was the only Tar Heel to reach base in the bottom of the inning but was stranded.
Despite both teams being unable to plate a run in the third, the Aggies added to its lead as the result of a walk and a Carolina fielding error, going up 2-0.
The Tar Heel offense exploded in the fifth. Carolina opened the inning with back-to-back walks from Destiny Middleton and Sara Jubas. Middleton was able to score off a wild pitch and Jubas was plated by an RBI single from Jones to make it a 2-2 game.
Senior Taylor Greene and Brooks then hit back-to-back singles. Greene and Brooks were both able to score off an error that Carlie Mrytle reached base on, making it 4-2.
Freshman Alex Brown then drew the third walk of the inning and Bri Stubbs was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Middleton then reached on an error and Myrtle, who was pinch ran for by Kayla Baptista, was tagged out at home.
Jubas then hit a two-RBI single, scoring Brown and Stubbs and making it 7-2.
Jones had the last hit of the game, a three-run home run to walk it off in the fifth inning.
Carolina improves to 7-4 on the season.
