Baseball Host App State In Lone Midweek Game

CHAPEL HILL – The No. 13 Diamond Heels return to Boshamer Stadium after a three-game series at Duke over the weekend, hosting Sun Belt Conference foe Appalachian State at 6 p.m. on Tuesday. The game will stream live on ACC Network Extra.
Tuesday's game marks the first meeting between the Diamond Heels and Mountaineers since 2018. Carolina has won 15 in a row over Appalachian State and boasts a 26-3 lead in the all-time series, which began in 1974.
Carolina is coming off a 2-1 series victory over Duke at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park, while Mountaineers lost two of three games at home to Georgia Southern. The Diamond Heels are 15-0 at Boshamer Stadium this season and have won 19 straight at home dating back to last year.
Left-handed pitcher Will Sandy will take the mound for Carolina and will be opposed by Appalachian State right-handed hurler Jason Cornatzer.

North Carolina is ranked among the Top 15 in five of six recognized collegiate baseball polls, peaking at No. 6 by Collegiate Baseball ... The Diamond Heels move up two positions in the D1 Baseball and NCBWA poll to No. 13 and jumped five spots USA Today Coaches and Baseball America polls, rising to No. 12 and No. 14. Perfect Game bumped the Heels up one spot in their poll to No. 17.

With an ERA of 2.07, North Carolina has the third-lowest team ERA in country heading into the third week of March. The Diamond Heels rank 11th in fewest walks issued per nine innings (2.93) , 12th in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (6.83) and have the 13th-best strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.57) in D1.

• Angel Zarate has hit safely in all 20 games this season and has collected multiple hits in six of the last eight games (.485, 16x33) and leads the Diamond Heels with 11 multi-hit games. Zarate has reached safely in his initial plate appearance in each of the last nine games.
• Johnny Castagnozzi has collected multiple hits in five of the last seven games; he is hitting .365 (13x33) over the last nine games. He has driven in a run in five of the last seven games and has homered in four of the last six games . He has six home runs in 69 at-bats, surpassing his 108 at-bat total a year ago.
