With the victory, Carolina improved to 10-6 overall this season, including 5-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Louisville fell to 13-6, 5-2.
The Tar Heels won for the fourth time in their last five matches.
"That was a big win today," head coach Sam Paul said afterward. "Louisville's a good team that had only lost one ACC match coming into today. That was a quality win for us."
The Tar Heels grabbed the doubles point to start the afternoon. Benjamin Sigouin and Peter Murphy cruised by Matthew Fung and Alex Westbrooks, 6-1, at No. 3. Brian Cernoch and and Mac Kiger, ranked No. 5 nationally, then picked up a 7-5 win at No. 1 over Etienne Donnet and Tin Chen to clinch the point.
Murphy picked up the first singles victory of the day, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win over David Mizrahi at No. 6 to give Carolina a 2-0 lead. Cernoch also won in straight sets, beating Josh Howard-Tripp 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 for a 3-0 UNC advantage.
Moments after Donnet beat Sigouin at No. 1 by a score of 6-4, 6-4, Kiger clinched the team victory for the Tar Heels in a tiebreak, beating Chen 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
