Baseball Host VT In Weekend Series

CHAPEL HILL – After back-to-back ACC Coastal Division road series at Duke and Miami (Fla.), No. 18 North Carolina returns to Boshamer Stadium to host a three-game series against division foe Virginia Tech this weekend.
Game one of the series is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Friday, April 1, followed by a pair of afternoon games on Saturday, April 2 (2 p.m.), and Sunday, April 3 (1 p.m.). All three games will be streamed on ACCNX.
This is the Hokies' first visit to Chapel Hill since 2018 when Carolina swept the three-game series and outscored them 26-4. The Diamond Heels are 20-1 at home against Virginia Tech since it joined the ACC in 2006.
UNC leads the all-time series, 76-28-2, and has won 39 of 46 ACC games.
PITCHING MATCHUP
The Diamond Heels enter the weekend ranked in the top 20 of five of the major six collegiate baseball polls, peaking at No. 14 by Collegiate Baseball. UNC is ranked 15th by Baseball America and comes in at No. 18 in the D1 Baseball, NCBWA and USA Today Coaches polls.
LAST TIME OUT
Alberto Osuna hit a towering two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning against UNCW on Tuesday night to propel the Diamond Heels to a 6-4 victory over the visiting Seahawks. Carolina jumped out to a 4-0 on the strength of Danny Serretti's three-run homer in the first. After UNCW posted four runs in the third, the UNC bullpen went to work holding the Seahawks to one hit the remainder of the game. Davis Palermo struck out five without allowing a hit in 3.1 innings of work, Shaddon Peavyhouse tossed a hitless seventh and Kyle Mott closed it out with three strikeouts in the final two frames.
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech enters this weekend's series at The Bosh on a five-game winning streak, which includes a 10-5 victory over in South Bend over No. 12 Notre Dame. The Hokies are tied with UNC for third-place in the Coastal Division with four losses after only playing one game against the Irish last weekend. Tech ranks second in the ACC in hitting with a .325 team batting average and leads the conference in home runs (47) and slugging percentage (.612). Hokie sophomore Jack Hurley leads the league with a .470 batting average, while Cade Hunter is fifth, hitting .409.
TOP PITCHING STAFF
The Diamond Heels enter the fourth weekend of ACC play ranked third in NCAA Division I with a 2.44 team ERA, behind Tennessee (1.86) and Virginia (2.33). UNC allows the 10th-fewest hits per nine innings in the country (7.11) and has the 19th-best strikeout-to-walk ratio (3.20). Carolina also leads the ACC in fewest walks per game (3.24).
FRESHMAN FLASH
Freshman Vance Honeycutt leads the ACC in stolen bases with 18 and ranks ninth overall among all NCAA Division I players. He also leads all D1 freshmen in stolen bases as well. Honeycutt is 18-for-19 on the base paths this season and began his career by swiping 10 in a row before being caught. His 18 stolen bases are the most by a Carolina freshman since 2000.
ALL ABOUT THAT BASE
With two walks against UNCW on Tuesday, junior Angel Zarate extended his consecutive games on base streak to 48 games and reached base via hit in 44 of those games. Unfortunately, one of those games wasn't Tuesday night which ended his hitting streak at 24 games.
HOT AT HOME
Carolina has won 21 straight games at home dating back to the final four games of the 2021 season. It's the program's longest home winning streak since winning 26 straight games between the end of the 2018 season (18) and start of the 2019 campaign (8). The Diamond Heels are 17-0 at home this season and have outscored their opponents by 87 runs in those games.
