Baseball Series Opener Goes To VT

CHAPEL HILL – Gavin Cross and Tanner Schobel hit back-to-back home runs in the first and fourth innings to lead visiting Virginia Tech over No.18 North Carolina, 12-1, at Boshamer Stadium on Friday night.
With the loss, the Diamond Heels fall to 19-7 overall and 5-5 in the ACC, while the Hokies improved to 16-6 and 4-4 in the league.
Cross and Schobel belted solo home runs in the first inning, then Cross hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning just ahead of Schobel's second solo blast for a 6-0 Virginia Tech lead.
The Hokies hit six total home runs with Carson DeMartini and Eduardo Malinkowski each going deep in the eighth inning. Tech pounded out 14 hits, compared to Carolina's nine.
UNC starting pitcher Connor Bovair (2-2) took the loss allowing six runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings pitched. Griffin Green (2-2) earned the win, tossing five scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
NOTABLES
• North Carolina suffered its first home loss of the season (17-1) ending its 21-game winning streak at Boshamer Stadium.
• The Diamond Heels lost to Virginia Tech at home for the first time since 2016 and just the second time in 22 all-time games at Boshamer Stadium.
• Angel Zarate doubled in the bottom of the third inning to extend his on-base streak to 49 games. Zarate collected two hits for his team-leading 14th multi-hit game of the season.
• Mac Horvath recorded his fourth two-hit game of the year.
• Vance Honeycutt got a hit in each of his final two at-bats for his seventh multi-hit game of the season.
• Freshman pitcher Carson Starnes made his second appearance of the season.
• Redshirt sophomore Caleb Cozart made his fourth appearance of the year and first since March 2.
• The Diamond Heels surrendered season-highs for runs, hits, and home runs.
• Virginia Tech's six home runs were the most allowed by Carolina pitchers since giving up seven to UCLA on Feb. 18, 2000.

• Cross and Schobel hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the first inning and Jack Hurley scored on an RBI-double from Malinowski (VT 3, UNC 0).
• After Nick Biddison drew two-out walk in the top of the fourth, Cross and Schobel hit back-to-back home runs for the second time in the game (VT 6, UNC 0).
• Cade Hunter scored on an RBI-single by Nick Holsea in the top of the fifth (VT 7, UNC 0).
• Gross scored on an RBI-ground out by Hurley in the top of the sixth (VT 8, UNC 0).
• Horvath scored the Diamond Heels first run in the bottom of the seventh on base hit by Honeycutt (VT 8, UNC 1).
• DeMartini hit a solo home run to center field and Malinowski hit a three-run homer to left field in the top of the eighth (VT 12, UNC 1).
