Men's Tennis Storms Back To Down Hokies, 4-1

CHAPEL HILL—Logan Zapp won the clinching match as North Carolina overcame an early deficit and beat Virginia Tech, 4-1, on Friday afternoon. The Hokies won the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead before the Tar Heels stormed back with four consecutive singles wins to grab the team victory in the Atlantic Coast Conference and outdoor opener for both squads.
Carolina improved its record this season to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the ACC. Virginia Tech fell to 4-8, 0-1.
The match was played at the outdoor courts at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club because of ongoing construction at UNC's normal home facility, the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
The Hokies started the day by taking the doubles point, winning at No. 1 over Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger to start the afternoon. Carolina rebounded at No. 2 doubles, when Casey Kania and Logan Zapp picked up a 6-3 win. Tech clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win over Henry Lieberman and Benjamin Sigouin at No. 3.
Cernoch, ranked No. 73, came up big in singles play, cruising past 68th-ranked Ryan Fishback by a score of 6-1 and 6-0 at No. 1. Sigouin followed with a win at No. 2 singles shortly thereafter, 6-1 and 6-2 over Hugo Maia. Kiger made the score 3-1 Tar Heels with a straight set, 6-2, 6-0 win over Alvaro Ariza at No. 3 singles.
Zapp took the clincher, 7-5 and 6-2 over Carlo Donato at No. 5 singles. Henry Lieberman (No. 4) and Anuj Watane (No. 6) saw their matches go unfinished.
The Tar Heels will return to action on Sunday at 11 a.m. against Virginia at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club.
