Virginia Tops Men's Tennis, 4-2

CARRBORO—No. 27 North Carolina fell by a score of 4-2 to No. 18 Virginia on Sunday at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club.

The Tar Heels are now 6-5 on the season and 1-1 within Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Cavaliers improve to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

To start the afternoon, the Tar Heels sent two games to tiebreakers in doubles but ultimately lost the point.Â

The fourth-ranked senior duo of Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger fought hard before falling short, losing 7-6 by way of a 7-5 tiebreak that clinched the doubles point for the Cavaliers. Court two went unfinished with No. 25 Logan Zapp and Casey Kania deadlocked against UVA at 6-6 in the middle of a 3-3 tiebreak.

Virginia extended their lead to 3-0, winning singles matches on courts three and four. Kiger lost to No. 61 Jvd Schulenburg on court three while senior Henry Liberman lost to No. 57 Ryan Goetz on court 4.

No. 73 Brian Cernoch and junior Anuj Watane kicked off the Tar Heel rally, winning in straight sets on courts two and six.

Virginia's Gianni Ross halted the Tar Heels' momentum, defeating sophomore Logan Zapp on court five 6-4 and 7-5, securing the win for the Cavaliers.Â

Court one went unfinished with senior Benjamin Sigouin tied 2-2 in the third set against No. 48 Inkai Montes.Â
