Baseball Loses Series To Virginia Tech

CHAPEL HILL – The Diamond Heels dropped game two of their three-game series with Virginia Tech on Saturday at Boshamer Stadium, 7-3.
With the loss, No. 18 North Carolina falls to 19-8 overall and 5-6 in the ACC while Virginia Tech improved to 17-6 overall and 5-4 in the conference.
Carolina pitchers issued 11 walks, including three with the bases loaded. Four Hokie hitters that drew a base on balls scored as did one batter that was hit by a pitch.
Virginia Tech scored five runs between the third and sixth inning and led 5-2 heading into the seventh. The Hokies added two runs in the eighth before Carolina scratched one final run across in the ninth.
Drue Hackenberg (5-0) scattered four hits across six innings and struck out for to earn the win, while UNC starter Max Carlson (1-1) was tagged with his first loss, allowing three runs and walking three in two innings pitched.
NOTABLES
• Angel Zarate double reached on an error in the bottom of the first inning to extend his on-base streak to 50 games.
• Mac Horvath recorded his fourth two-hit game of the year.
• Johnny Castagnozzi and Mikey Madej collected two hits each for the Daimons Heels. It was Castagnozzi's 11 multi-hit game of the season and Madej's second.
• The Diamond Heels issued a season-high 11 walks, their most since walking 13 at Virginia in 2016 (April 17).
• UNC pitchers struck out 14 Virginia Tech batters, one shy of its season-high of 15 against Miami (March 27). It was the 16th time this season that Carolina pitchers fanned 10 or more hitters.

• Virginia Tech scored three runs in the top of the third inning, two on bases loaded walks and one on an RBI-single by Tanner Schobel (VT 3, UNC 0).
• Zarate scored Carolina's first run in the bottom of the fourth on a groundout (VT 3, UNC 1).
• Jack Hurley doubled down the right field line in the top of the fifth to plate Gavin Cross (VT 4, UNC 1).
• Tackett scored on a bases loaded walk to Hurley in the top of the sixth (VT 5, UNC 1).
• Danny Serretti scored on Tomas Frick's ground out to second in the bottom of the sixth (VT 5, UNC 2).
• The Hokies scored twice in the ninth, first on Schobel's RBI-single, then on Eduardo Malinowski's ground out (VT 7, UNC 2).
• Serretti lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Mikey Madej in the bottom of the ninth (VT 7, UNC 3).
