April 1, 2022 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – University of North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis, forward Brady Manek and former head coach Roy Williams were named winners of national awards Friday as announced by CollegeInsider.com.
Davis, who has led the Tar Heels to a 28-9 record, NCAA East Regional championship and berth in Saturday's national semifinals, is the recipient of the John McLendon Award as the 2021-22 National Coach of the Year. The award covers all divisions, including men's D-I, D-II, D-III, NAIA and NJCAA. Houston's Kelvin Sampson was the winner in 2020-21.
The Tar Heels went 15-5 to tie for second place in the ACC, have two wins over top-five ranked teams, including an NCAA second-round win over top-seed Baylor, and have won 16 of their last 19 games heading into the Final Four.
Manek transferred to Carolina prior to this season after playing four seasons and graduating from the University of Oklahoma. He is the winner of the Riley Wallace Award as the transfer who has made the most impact in college basketball.
The Harrah, Okla., native leads the Tar Heels with 92 three-pointers and in three-point percentage (.398) and is third on the team in scoring (15.2). He has scored 86 points in Carolina's four NCAA Tournament wins, more than any other player in the Tournament.
Williams retired one year ago today after 18 seasons as Carolina's head coach and 33 as a college head coach. The Tar Heel alum won 903 games, the third-most by a Division I head coach in college basketball history. He led UNC to NCAA championships in 2005, 2009 and 2017. He is the recipient of the Gene Bartow Award for contributions to the game of college basketball.
