Baseball Loses Rubber Match To Georgia Tech

CHAPEL HILL – Georgia Tech hit two grand slams, one in the second by Kevin Parada and another in the ninth by Tim Borden, to defeat North Carolina 11-8 at Boshamer Stadium on Easter Sunday, giving the Yellow Jackets a 2-1 series win.
Tech (23-14, 9-9 ACC) scored all its runs off home runs with Borden also hitting a solo homer in the seventh Tres Gonzalez and Colin Hall belted a solo home runs. Borden finished the game 2-for-5 with five RBIs.
Carolina (22-14, 8-10) pounded out 11 hits with four players collecting two hits each. Vance Honeycutt was the lone member of the foursome to get a pair of extra base hits with a double and home run. Danny Serretti had a triple as part of his two-hit game and one of Tomas Frick's two hits was a double.
The Yellow Jackets got out to a five-run lead, but the Heels scored two in the third inning and two in fifth inning to make it a one-run game.
Georgia Tech answered back with a pair of solo home runs to push its lead back to three after seven innings, but Alberto Osuna hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth.
Caden O'Brien came on to try hold the deficit to one run in the ninth but after retiring the first batter he faced, he hit two of the next three batters with an intentional walk sandwiched between. Borden then hit a grand slam to give the Jackets a five-run cushion.
Honeycutt hit a two-run home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but the Heels were unable to push across any more runs.
UNC starter Connor Bovair (2-3) took the loss after allowing three runs on one hit with four walks in an inning pitched, while Dawswon Brown (2-0) earned the victory. John Medish recorded his first career save.
NOTABLES
• Serretti extended his on base streak and hitting streak to 10 games. It's the first time in his career that he's hit safely in 10 consecutive games.
• Honeycutt homered for the second straight day after going 14 straight games without a home run.
• Honeycutt, Osuna, and Hunter Stokely had two RBIs each.
• Carolina used seven pitchers with Kyle Mott (2.1) and Davis Palermo (2.0) throwing multiple innings.
• The Diamond Heels have hit multiple home runs in four consecutive games and seven of the last nine games.
