Rowing Competes On Day One Of Lake Wheeler Invitational
April 22, 2022 | Women's Rowing
RALEIGH, N.C. – The North Carolina women's rowing team logged strong finishes in rounds one and two on Friday on Lake Wheeler.
"Today, we had back-to-back opportunities to race a full field with some real speed and worked through some new concepts and skills," said North Carolina head coach Erin Neppel. "We close margins on teams we had seen before and had some wins over others which was positive on the day. This team is doing a great job of bringing the effort and making changes every time they race, and the progress is measurable."
In a field that included ranked squads in No. 9 Penn, No. 11 Duke, and No. 15 Syracuse and 12 other strong teams, the Tar Heel 1V8, 2V8, 3V8, 1V4, and 2V4 came away with solid performances.
In round one, the 1V8 crew notched their best time of the season with a 06:48.101 with a fourth-place finish in the heat. Later on, the 3V8 unit logged a solid 07:18.488 to finish second in their heat. In the 1V4 race, the Tar Heel boat shaved 45 seconds off of their previous best time with a 07:54.765.
Later in the day, during round two, the 2V8 crew improved their time for a fourth-place finish in the heat. The 2V4 crew shaved off eight seconds from their earlier race for a time of 07:59.502.
"We get one more go tomorrow morning, and we plan to take some bigger risks to push further in the field," Neppel said. "Looking forward to turning around and getting back out there."
The Tar Heels will be back on the water tomorrow at Lake Wheeler for the third and final round. Racing will start at 9 a.m. with the 3V8s.
